Cross-border challenges in competition enforcement in innovative markets

4 October 2017

Time: 8:20am - 7:30pm
Venue: Ironmongers’ Hall, Shaftesbury Place, Barbican, London EC2Y 8AA

We thank our sponsors, CRA, Google, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher and Latham & Watkins for making the organisation of this event possible.

The aim of the conference is to showcase areas of convergence and divergence in competition enforcement, in markets where innovation plays an essential role. The conference will present different perspectives from EU, US as well as China. Cases such as Google, Dow/Dupont, Bayer/Monsanto as well as the issue of agreements in sharing markets are prime examples of the importance of innovation and of the role that competition authorities worldwide have in ensuring competitive markets and the enhancement of consumer welfare. Economic theories related to the impact of innovation in markets have evolved and are rightly influencing competition enforcement.

The conference shall consist of four panels. The first panel will be on the economics of innovation where the latest economic thinking and its impact on competition enforcement will be discussed. The second panel will discuss amongst other things the thorny issue of sharing agreements, agreements related to OTAs, and algorithmic collusion. The third panel will focus on the importance of innovation in unilateral conduct and the focus of competition authorities on ensuring innovation is not mitigated. The fourth panel will focus on merger enforcement and the adverse impact on innovation and R&D that concentrations in innovative markets can entail.
